“Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.”

— Dr. Joel Freeman

I’m not sure if Dr. Freeman said that himself, or if he got it from someone else, but it’s sure a great thing to keep in mind.

The last thing I want to do right now is continue edits on my 2007 NaNoWriMo manuscript, but it’s been such a long time coming that I refuse to give up halfway through. It’s a tough slog. It’s discouraging, and extremely time-consuming.

But it’s also a great lesson in perseverance! Because if I don’t do it, nobody else will, and that’s a disservice to a story I believe in.

What are you persevering through this week, writing-related or otherwise?

I’ve never heard a better description of perseverance!
Right now, I’m trying hard to make my outline for a new WIP as great as possible and not cutting corners by making things too easy on my MC.

In my many years trying to get published, I’ve noticed that perseverance is the main factor in eventually getting published. Many will give up…many will probably take MANY years and lots of breaks (as I have) but only those who stick with it and really pursue it will succeed.

Reward yourself if you finish! May I suggest a sparkly pen? That’s what I would do.

Lydia — I know what that’s like! Raising the stakes is something I really need to work on… but then I feel bad for my character… no, no sympathy! Aaaugh! *pushes MC down flight of stairs* …oops?

Stephanie – It’s so true! In this business, it seems you either: a) get lucky, or b) persevere through the exhaustion until you’re published. Eventually, it’ll happen, as long as we don’t give up (as tempting as it may be sometimes).

Barbara – Hmm… I like the way you think! But then I’d need a lovely new notebook to go with it. Just sayin’.

I agree about the notebook. Maybe even, a sparkly notebook…
