C is for Courses

Posted by: Faith   in Creating Coldcuts

Anyone taking any interesting writing courses this spring / summer?

TheCallingIt’s been awhile since I’ve taken one, but I took the plunge and signed up for “Intensive Creative Writing” with Brian Henry (his website is also linked on the sidebar of this blog). Brian Henry had a big influence on author Kelly Armstrong’s development, and from what I’ve seen she speaks very highly of his courses and ability to help writers think critically about their work.

I’m hoping this course is what I need to re-jumpstart my stalled writing. I did so well for 3/4ths of last year, but then the stress and other commitments kicked into high gear, and writing hit the backburner.

That’s got to change!

So, here’s hoping.

If you’re in Southern Ontario and free on Friday afternoons, come join me!!! Open-mouthed smile

That sounds like a great way to revive writing excitement. I find critique groups and conferences are good for that, too.
Nice to meet you, Faith! :)

Aww, too far for me. But good luck with it. If you can find a good teacher courses are a great way to kick start your writing engine.

P.S. the kitties will get very sinister :)

You’ll hae to let us know how it goes! I haven’t taken a writing course in a few years, but every once in a while think I should. Such a smart idea :)

Joe — Ah, I suppose it is for you! Maybe someday you’ll visit Canada if you haven’t already! I do hope to get to India someday as well… I’m currently doing my best to learn Hindi, though I imagine it’ll be a few years yet before I’m ready to test it out with anyone other than my computer monitor… haha.

Faith — Yes, both of those are great as well! If only conferences weren’t so expensive… but they’re definitely worth it if you can go and make the most of it. There’s one around here in November I’m hoping to get to, fingers crossed!

Stephanie — It’s true, and I have a feeling Brian’s course will be just the thing I need right now!

Juliana — I’ll definitely post about my experience(s)! There are many good inexpensive online courses too if you’re looking to ease back into writing courses, especially in a particular area of technique or topic. It’s worth it!

I’ve heard great things about Brian Henry’s courses, too, Faith. Unfortunately, I have to work some Friday afternoons. Let us know how it goes!
